“House of Dragons” hits nearly 10 million viewers, becoming HBO’s largest premiere

The prequel to HBO’s hit show “Game of Thrones,” has become its largest premiere ever.

Making its season premiere this Sunday, “House of Dragons” reached over 9.986 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max, becoming the largest premiere for a show in HBO History, according to IGN.

“It was wonderful to see millions of Game of Thrones fans return with us to Westeros last night,” HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys told IGN. “House of the Dragon features an incredibly talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into the production, and we’re ecstatic with viewers’ positive response. We look forward to sharing with audiences what else George, Ryan, and Miguel have in store for them this season.”

The prequel series premiere also helped HBO capture its largest single-night audience since the Game of Thrones series finale, according to IGN.

At one point, the large number of subscribers trying to gain access to the show caused the HBO Max app to crash for many users, according to Yahoo.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” “House of Dragons” is set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” telling the story of House Targaryen, as said on HBO’s website.
